Today’s Bicycle Ride: The C&O Canal Trail

July 5th, 2010 No comments

I went for something a little different for today’s bicycle ride. I took White’s Ferry across the Potomac to Maryland and rode down the C&O canal trail. I’m not sure why I haven’t ridden this before. It’s very nice. It’s not paved like the W&OD trail but it’s all under a canopy of trees which was good protection against the sun today. I’m definitely going to have to ride this trail some more.

Pushed it a bit today. Tried to keep my heart rate above 135 for most of the ride.

Tour de Cure Ride – 63 Miles! (a metric century)

June 20th, 2010 No comments

This is the longest bike ride for me since I rode the MS150 in 1998. The first 30 miles were fairly easy, the next 25 miles were a bit tougher and the last 9 miles or so were a bitch. The morning wasn’t too bad because I had fresh legs and the temperature was in the 70s. As the day went on, it just got hotter. The last 9 miles or so was on the trail where there isn’t much shade and the temperature was in the mid 90s. At the end I just slowly climbed any up hill and then coasted down the other side.

In any case it’s nice to have set a goal and met it. I almost wussed out and rode the 33 mile ride but at the last minute I manned-up and went for the 63 mile one. (The idea of riding the 100 mile ride never crossed my mind)

Thanks to all the people who donated and helped me raise money for this ride:

Zbigniew Tyrlik, Todd Peer, Nancy McCollum, John Kozyn, William Swart, Gregory Piller, Dan Phelan, Michael Phillips and Lance MacNevin.

Today’s Bicycle Ride: 23 miles

June 17th, 2010 No comments

My last ride before the Tour de Cure ride. It was harder than it should have been. Five mile in and I was ready to turn back but I stuck it out and finished.

I tested out a new external battery setup for my iPhone. The iPhone usually only makes it about 2 hours if the screen and GPS are running most of the time. So I bought an external battery and attached it to the bicycle. I turned off all the radio portions of the iPhone that I could (WiFi, GPRS, Bluetooth), used the music player and kept the screen on for the whole ride. The external battery showed 2 of 5 LEDs for battery when I got home. The iPhone was still fully charged.
